Why Is It Important to Have a Work Contract in the Netherlands with Health Insurance Included?

If you want to work in the Netherlands, having health insurance is essential. The Dutch system requires all employees to be insured in order to access medical services. At DB Work, we provide this insurance as part of your Dutch work contract, ensuring that you can benefit from the country's healthcare system without any extra worries.

How Does the Dutch Healthcare System Work?

Unlike other European countries, the healthcare system in the Netherlands is managed by the government, but most services are provided by private companies. Dutch residents are required to have health insurance that covers essential medical services and emergencies. If you do not have insurance, you risk fines and losing your access to free medical care.

The Dutch healthcare system offers universal access and high-quality services, making it one of the most efficient in Europe.

Types of Health Insurance in the Netherlands

There are two main types of health insurance:

  • Basisverzekering (Basic Insurance) – Mandatory for all employees, covering essential medical services.
  • Aanvullende Verzekering (Supplementary Insurance) – Optional, providing extra benefits such as extended dental care or specialized treatments.

Additionally, the Dutch system includes two payment mechanisms:

  • Premie – A monthly fee for insurance, usually automatically deducted from your bank account.
  • Eigen risico – A fixed amount (around €400) that you must pay if you require additional treatments not included in the basic package.

What Does Basic Health Insurance Cover?

The mandatory basic health insurance includes:

  • General practitioner (huisarts) consultations;
  • Hospitalization and treatments;
  • Emergency services and ambulance transportation;
  • Prescription medications;
  • Certain medical tests;
  • Limited dental care for adults;
  • Mental health treatment;
  • Maternity and childbirth care.

What Happens If You Don’t Have Health Insurance?

In the Netherlands, you have four months to arrange health insurance after starting work. If you fail to do so, you will receive a notification and an additional three-month grace period to comply.

  • If you still don’t have insurance, you will be fined €437.
  • After another six months, you will receive a second fine of the same amount.
  • If you continue without insurance, the Dutch authorities will automatically enroll you in a health insurance policy and deduct the payments directly from your bank account.

Basic Health Insurance Included in the DB Work Contract

With DB Work, you receive basic health insurance for the entire duration of your work contract in the Netherlands. This ensures access to essential medical care without needing to search for and pay separately for a health policy.

If you require additional medical services, you can opt for a supplementary insurance (Aanvullende Verzekering), which you will need to arrange and pay for separately.

Conclusion

In addition to local transportation and accommodation with utilities, a DB Work contract in the Netherlands includes comprehensive health insurance, ensuring a smooth transition and access to quality medical services.
