Have you arrived in the Netherlands for work, or have you been planning to travel there for a while? If you're looking to find a job in your field of expertise, we can assist you not only with employment but also with handling the necessary paperwork.
Since documentation is crucial, today we will discuss DigiD and its importance for anyone staying in the Netherlands for an extended period. It's important to note that DB Work does not offer assistance in obtaining the DigiD code, but we can guide you to official sources to help you get it on your own.
Each country has a system to identify every resident living within its borders. In the Netherlands, this is the DigiD code, which is widely used online on important government platforms. Essentially, without a DigiD code, you won’t have access to financial, educational, or banking institutions. It is connected to your BSN (citizen service number), and you can use it by logging in with a username and password.
If you want to live a decent life in the Netherlands, having a DigiD code is more than necessary. Almost any significant action you plan to take in the Netherlands depends on this DigiD code. Whether you want to work in the country or study there, you will need a DigiD. You won’t be able to pursue a master's or PhD in the Netherlands, nor will you be able to pay the required taxes without it.
More importantly, without this code, you won't be able to reclaim certain taxes that the Dutch government is entitled to refund. If you plan to take out health insurance or a private pension, you will need a DigiD. It's also important to mention that you won't be fined or forced to leave the country if you don't have this code, but you will be significantly limited in any interaction with Dutch government institutions.
Compared to other approvals or documents you can obtain in the Netherlands, the DigiD code is quite easy to get. You can start by visiting the official government website. You'll need to fill out the form with basic personal information. If you're having trouble navigating the website, you can switch to the English version for easier understanding.
As of the information available in September 2024, you can apply for DigiD only if you have the following: a valid ID or passport, your BSN (Municipal Registration Code), registration in the Non-residents Database (RNI), a phone number you can access, and a valid email address. At the end of the form, you'll need to choose a verification method. You can opt for SMS authentication, which will save you a lot of time and is a simple method that the Dutch commonly use for security checks.
On the website page, you should see an interface that helps you create your username and password. Remember, this account will be used for most government institutions, so it should be a simple name without too many symbols or spaces. The closer your username is to your actual name, the better. As for the password, it should be like any other password: complex enough to prevent others from using it, but simple enough for you to remember.
If everything goes smoothly and you pass all security checks, you should receive a code to activate your DigiD account. When applying from outside the Netherlands, you'll receive this code via SMS or email. If you are in the Netherlands, you can collect the code from a DigiD office at the municipality. Note: this code is valid for only 30 days. Once you receive it, return to the website and use it to activate your account. Click the activation button, and your DigiD code will now be valid.
Now that you have your DigiD code for the Netherlands, all that’s left to do is start using it for the purposes you created it for. To make things even easier, you can also install the DigiD app on your phone, ensuring quick and efficient access to all essential government services.
