If you want to work abroad, especially in the Netherlands, you should know from the beginning that this is only possible if you have health insurance. No employer in the Netherlands will sign a contract with an employee who does not have such insurance. To be eligible for health insurance in the Netherlands, you need to go through one of the processes we will talk about in the paragraphs below.
Health insurance in The Netherlands can be of several types. You can choose one of them based on your needs and what they can cover. But before discussing these types of packages of health insurance to choose from, it is good to know how the Dutch medical system works.
The medical system in the Netherlands is in the care of the government, but everything related to its management belongs to the private sector. Thus, most medical services are provided by private companies following government-established principles. In the Netherlands, it is mandatory to have health insurance to cover most of your usual medical needs and health emergencies.
Every citizen is entitled to two main categories of Dutch health insurance whenever they want. They are called Premie and Eigen Risco. The Premie is a medical insurance policy that is paid every month, and most of the time it is deducted from the bank account of the citizen or employee. Eigen Risco is a category of health insurance that can be paid in cash by each person who needs other medical treatments that are partially covered by health insurance.
In 2022, Eigen Risco is 385 euros and must be paid only by people who have additional medical costs. If you do not have medical expenses, you do not have to pay this insurance.
Health insurance in the Netherlands can be identified by two general names: Basisverzekering and Aanuvellende Verzekering. The first is the compulsory health insurance in the Netherlands, and the second is the optional health insurance.
Basisverzekering Compulsory medical insurance the Netherlands
This is the most common form of health insurance that every citizen must have to work. It includes most of the medical services that someone may need in their lifetime.
Most of these medical services must also be covered by Eigen Risco insurance, which we mentioned about earlier.
Flexpolis is a standard, basic insurance that can be used by every citizen or resident of the Netherlands. This insurance will help you get free medical services. Such insurance is usually provided for those who go to work abroad. The biggest advantage is that it can also be used in your home country. If you work in the Netherlands and return to Romania for a shorter period, you will be able to use the insurance in the country as well. All you need is a statement that you are insured by another Dutch company.
The insurance can also be used for travel or a temporary stay in countries in Europe or Switzerland.
In the Netherlands, medical care is included in the insurance of a person. The whole insurance administration process can be done on the My HollandZorg application.
HollandZorg is the website through which anyone can pay for such Flexpolis insurance. To be able to access all services, you must log in to the My HollandZorg application. You can do this with your mobile phone and ID number.
In the application, you have access to medical services and also the policy program. The insurance policies prove that you are insured through My HollandZorg.
You also have access to the European digital EHIC card, which you can save directly on your phone. This is very useful when you are outside the Netherlands.

The four-month time limit in which you must have health insurance is sufficient for any employee. If during this time you are unable to obtain insurance, you will receive a letter from the health insurance institution that will give you an additional 3 months to do so.
If you do not succeed in these 3 months, you will receive a fine of approximately 437 euros.
After another six months, you will receive another fine of 437 euros.
