The Dutch health system offers medical services to all Dutch citizens, as well as to expats. There are two ways of accessing health services in The Netherlands: free of charge, if you have health insurance, or for a fee if you need additional medical services.
DB Work employees receive health insurance for the duration of their employment in The Netherlands as part of their working contract, in addition to other benefits. In this article, we present you with information about the Dutch healthcare system, as well as the medical services included in the insurance provided by DB Work.
There are two types of health insurance in the Netherlands, called Basisverzekering (basic insurance) and Aanvullende Verzekering (optional). The first one is mandatory health insurance, which DB Work provides through the employment contract, and the second one is the one you choose optionally if you need additional services not covered by Basisverzekering.
This basic health insurance, which is guaranteed if you sign an employment contract with us, will take care of your medical needs while working at DB Work. This includes consultations, hospital care, medication, medical transport, obstetrics, and medical care during pregnancy.
Please be informed that the medical insurance offered by DB Work is only valid for the duration of the employment contract.
Firstly, when you need medical care, you should consult a general practitioner (huisarts) as the first step. The general practitioner provides primary healthcare and, depending on your needs, can refer you to specialists or other medical services.
In this system, you receive a range of medical services for free, as well as emergency care at the hospital. Here are the medical services covered by the health insurance provided through the DB Work contract:
It's very important to know that this health insurance will cover your costs no matter which hospital you go to or what care you receive.
Dutch medical services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the Dutch (and European) emergency number for life-threatening situations is 112. It is important to note, however, that there are other emergency numbers you can call depending on the situation. Please note that, unless it is an emergency, you can only visit a hospital or specialist doctor with a referral from your GP.
Yes, if one or both parents work for DB Work and, together with the child, have settled entirely in the Netherlands, the child will also be covered. The important condition is that the child must be under 18. Once the child turns 18, they will no longer be insured under the parents' health insurance.
